Things to do in and around our estate

There is plenty to do and see in and around the Shieldaig Lodge Hotel estate.

Deer stalking

The Lodge has its own stalkers and ghillies. Red deer stalking is available from mid-August. A day’s stalking normally commences at 09.30 after having checked the rifle on our range. We will use an 8 wheel Argo to take us close to the more remote stalking areas. Our stalker will take up to a maximum of 2 rifles on one beat and a maximum of 2 beats.

Potential Rifles are requested if they have undertaken some walking and/or physical exercise prior to arrival, as the hills are very unforgiving to the unfit; good strong footwear is a must, and aspiring Rifles are recommended to bring a windproof outer jacket which can be worn once the heights have been ascended.

Sporting weapons are required to be of above .243 calibre. Our preferred minimum calibre is .270 for stags NB 12 pointers and above are available as per the stalking guides authorization and discretion only. Normal traditional Highland stalking methods apply.

Prices available on application. Please enquire with our team to book.

Walking and Hiking

The 26,000 acre estate offers a variety of walks/hikes – there are a number of beaches, lochs and munros to explore.

Opinan Beach To Carr Point

This is a lovely little walk. Turn right towards Badachro and keep going until you reach Opinan (about 5 miles along the Estate road). Park at the beach and walk towards the beach until you approach the sane, then cut right. There is a rough little track that mostly follows the shore. There is a stile to cross the only fence. Walk all the way to the little headlands known as Carr Point where you have gorgeous views over to Skye and Rhona. You can return by the road to do a circuit or go back the way you came and finish by going along the beach. This walk is about 2-3km return.

Red Point And Faraway Beach

Red point is a must see beach as the huge dunes and fantastic views are unmissable. If you fancy a short stroll you can just go for a wander down to Red Point. Or, you can park where the road ends, go through the gate to your left and walk through the farm to get to Red Point Faraway Beach. Once at Faraway beach, you cut right around the headland, effectively doing a circuit, which brings you back to Red Point beach at the car park. The Headland section can be boggy and the track dubious but you can’t get lost if you follow the coastline. The walk is about 5km.

At Faraway beach you can see where the old salmon bothies used to be. This is where Billy Connolly’s last film was shot and was a popular stop off with the Queen when she was taking a summer cruise on Brittania.

Pony trekking

Gairloch Trekking Centre is open Easter to October.

Come and enjoy pony trekking on the beautiful Red Point beaches with breath-taking scenery. We have a great selection of well-mannered native horses and ponies to suit all ages and abilities. The trekking centre operates to a very high standard with friendly, knowledgeable and qualified staff. Enjoy amazing rides on the Estate beaches.

Whale Watching

Hebridean Whale Cruises are based at the pier in Gairloch and is one of the top cruises in the UK for whale spotting. Minke whales, dolphins, basking sharks and many more in their natural environment.

The Applecross Drive

One of our favourite drives! On a wild peninsula in Wester Ross, Applecross has a wonderful atmosphere creating the impression that you are at the ‘edge of the world’ probably because of its inaccessibility.  A winding coast road with great views all the way, experience the Bealach Na Ba (pass of the cattle). The road is one of the highest in Britain.
